PROJECT OVERVIEW
This project involved placing gravel on existing county roads in western North Dakota. After the gravel was placed and the roadways were shaped, the contractor mixed Calcium Chloride (CaCl) into the top 4 inches of the gravel. The purpose of the calcium chloride is to provide a gravel surface that has less dust and needs less maintenance. It should be less susceptible to rutting and displacement. In addition to installing gravel and the placement of the CaCl, the contractor also repaired a few areas that were severely saturated. These areas had significant ruts and were very soft. The contractor removed the good gravel on the top of the road and then cement treated the base material.
